All couples must apply for a marriage license in New Jersey in the bride's home town. If the bride does not reside in New Jersey, you can apply at the municipal office of the groom's town. If both the bride and groom are from out of state, apply at the municipal office of the town where the marriage ceremony will take place. Marriage licenses can be obtained from the town registrar,clerk or office of vital statistics. The fee to obtain your license is $28.00. A picture ID is required such as a driver's license, and certified copies of birth certificates, or naturalization certificates, or valid passport or alien card. You will also need a Social Security card. The waiting period between applying for your license and receiving it is 72 hours; for weekend weddings your last day to apply for a Friday wedding is Tuesday. Previous married people need to check what documents are needed. A witness will be needed who is over 18 years old when you apply for your marriage license. You may get married immediately after officially obtaining your marriage license. A New Jersey marriage license expires after 30 days. If your marriage license expires before you are married, you must reapply for another marriage license. After the marriage ceremony is performed, I will file the marriage license within 5 days to the Registrar of Vital Statistics in the town where the ceremony was performed. I will give you a copy of the completed license after the marriage ceremony.
